Bay Ambulance is an Advanced Life Support (ALS) Emergency Medical Service located in beautiful Upper Michigan along the southern shoreline of Lake Superior.
After an unfortunate accident at a local sawmill in the late 1960's, the need for an organized response to emergencies became apparent. A handful of concerned community members took the initiative to become First Aid 1 & 2 certified. In 1968 Bay Ambulance was officially organized.
The group was then able to convince the county to procure a retired Pontiac Ambulance from an Air Force surplus in Lower Michigan. Members would take turns keeping the ambulance at their private residence depending on who was on call at the time. In 1976 our ambulance garage was constructed in Baraga. In 1982 we hired our first full time Paramedic and Director. In 1988, we became licensed as a Limited Advanced Life Support service. By 1995, we had grown into a full Advanced Life Support agency.
We are a non-profit, community minded rural service in Baraga, Michigan. Our service area is approximately 1,500 square miles with a population of about 9,000 people. We are centered amongst an outdoors person's dream and photographer's paradise, surrounded by scenic waterfalls, picturesque terrain and bordering the greatest and cleanest of all the great lakes. We are surrounded by miles and miles of hiking, biking, skiing, snowmobiling and ORV trails. Other popular activities are: fishing, hunting, swimming, boating/kayaking, camping, rock climbing and rock picking . Our agency provides EMS to our service area with 4 ambulances and responds with specialized equipment for calls related to the paradise that surrounds us. Along with our top notch local 911 ambulance service, we also provide remote medical service and transport utilizing our four-wheel drive ambulance and our off-road rescue ORV with a patient transport trailer.
Our agency continues to grow and strive to provide quality Emergency Medical Care for Baraga County and surrounding areas through ambitious training and progressive EMS technology. We have an outstanding working relationship with our local hospital and participate in many mutual trainings.
Each day we strive to abide by our mission statement, which is:
To provide 24/7 quality Emergency Medical Services and transportation of the sick and injured in our community service area in a timely fashion.
